Oman reviews human rights progress at UPR session in Geneva

Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman reviewed the progress achieved since its third Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in January 2021, presenting the developments and reforms implemented in the field of human rights.

The review was conducted during the participation of the Omani delegation in the UPR session in Geneva, Switzerland. The delegation was headed by Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Saidi, Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, and included representatives of relevant government authorities.

Oman’s fourth national report was prepared by the Legal Committee in coordination with civil society organizations and government agencies, emphasizing the significance of inclusive participation in the preparation process.

The report highlights Oman’s accession to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, in addition to its prior accession to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, bringing the total number of core human rights treaties joined by Oman to eight out of nine. It also notes the submission of reports under the relevant international human rights instruments.

The report further outlines legislative developments in areas including social protection, media regulation, nationality, organ and tissue transplantation, combating human trafficking, the rights of persons with disabilities, and the regulatory framework for domestic workers.

During the session, Ambassador Idris bin Abdul Rahman Al Khanjari, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations Office in Geneva, reiterated Oman’s commitment to the UPR mechanism and announced the Sultanate’s first nomination for membership in the Human Rights Council for the 2028–2030 term.

Oman received numerous interventions and recommendations from 94 participating States, and the delegation responded to the points raised during the review.

Concluding the session, the Minister affirmed that all recommendations would be duly considered, underscoring the UPR’s role in enhancing human rights performance and benefiting from international experiences.
