Environment Authority warns against diving near Orcas following viral video

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman’s Environment Authority has issued a public warning following the circulation of a video showing an individual diving near an orca whale off the coast of Qantab in Muscat Governorate, stressing that such behavior poses serious safety risks.

The Authority emphasised that approaching or attempting to interact with wild marine animals, particularly powerful species such as orcas, is dangerous and irresponsible. Orcas are wild marine creatures whose behaviour cannot be predicted and may become aggressive if they feel threatened.

Officials urged the public to observe marine wildlife only from a safe distance, preferably from boats, and to avoid swimming, diving, or attempting close contact with marine animals to ensure personal safety and protect natural ecosystems.

The Authority reiterated that respecting wildlife and maintaining safe distances are essential for preserving biodiversity and safeguarding both humans and marine life.
