New training centre in Muscat to empower girls in competitive athletics

Muscat:The Oman Athletics Association has activated a sports development centre for girls in Muscat Governorate as part of its efforts to support girls' participation in sports and empower them to develop their competitive abilities.

The center serves as a comprehensive training platform aimed at discovering and refining promising athletic talents and enhancing their readiness for local and international competitions. This will strengthen the presence of Omani girls in the sports arena and contribute to establishing a sustainable foundation for women in athletics.

Noura bint Salem Al Balushi, a member of the Oman Athletics Association's board of directors and supervisor of the centre, stated that activating the centre for girls reflects the association's strategic vision of building a competitive generation of female athletes.

She noted that the programme not only identifies talented girls but also includes a comprehensive training plan covering technical, physical, and psychological aspects, providing them with a safe and stimulating environment that supports their ambitions and fulfils the aspirations of the Sultanate of Oman in women's athletics.

Al Balushi added: “The center’s activation follows a two-phase selection program based on precise criteria that consider both talent and physical readiness. Both phases included public and private schools in Muscat Governorate. The first phase resulted in the selection of 50 students from 12 schools, while the second phase saw the selection of 15 students from 4 schools, after they underwent a series of specialized physical and skill assessments to identify the most outstanding individuals.”

She explained that the players are currently training under the supervision of Omani coach Shanoona Al-Habsi, a highly qualified national figure with extensive field experience and a deep passion for developing champions.
