US and Iran close to framework agreement amid uncertainty over timing

Washington: The United States and Iran have moved closer to a long‑awaited framework agreement to end their war, but uncertainty remains over the timing, with Washington and Islamabad predicting a deal on Sunday while Tehran has cast doubt.

US President Donald Trump and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said they expected the framework deal to be finalised on Sunday. Trump wrote on social media that the agreement was scheduled to be signed on his 80th birthday.

Sharif said both sides had agreed on a framework for a peace deal and that Islamabad was preparing to sign it electronically on Sunday, followed by technical talks in the coming days.

Iran, however, has not confirmed signing on Sunday. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei warned against speculating on the date, telling Iranian state media it would not happen “tomorrow,” though it could take place “in the coming days.”

Trump wrote on Truth Social that maritime navigation in the region — a vital artery for global oil supplies that Iran had closed — “will be open to everyone” immediately after the signing.
