Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has reaffirmed its support for the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, underscoring the importance of ensuring its successful implementation to advance regional peace and stability.
The position was conveyed by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Oman’s Foreign Minister, during the joint ministerial meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and the United States, held in Bahrain.
In his remarks, the Foreign Minister emphasized that the memorandum represents an important step toward achieving the desired peace, restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and ensuring the safe and uninterrupted flow of maritime traffic through one of the world’s most strategically significant waterways.
Al Busaidi noted that Oman, as a littoral state overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, bears a special responsibility in supporting international efforts aimed at safeguarding maritime navigation. He stressed that the Sultanate remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The Foreign Minister further affirmed that any future arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz would not involve the imposition of transit fees on vessels passing through the waterway.
