FIH chief praises Oman, offers Hockey5s boost

MUSCAT: International Hockey Federation (FIH) President Tayyab Ikram hailed Oman’s growing contribution to the development of hockey, describing the Sultanate as one of the sport’s leading centres in the region.

Addressing the Arab Hockey Federation General Assembly, Ikram praised Oman for successfully hosting major Asian and international tournaments and for its continued commitment to developing hockey infrastructure and competitions. “Oman has become a leading destination for hockey in Asia and the Arab world through its commitment to organising major international and continental events and its efforts to develop the game,” Ikram said.

He also announced a new FIH development initiative aimed at expanding hockey across the Arab world. “Any Arab national federation that establishes a Hockey5s facility within the next two months will receive a Hockey5s pitch from the FIH as a gift,” he said, encouraging member associations to accelerate grassroots development.

Ikram remains in Muscat for the Asian Hockey Federation Junior Women’s Asia Cup, which gets under way on Sunday at the Hockey Oman Arena in Al Amerat. Five teams - Bangladesh, Hong Kong China, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan - will compete in the tournament, reinforcing Oman’s reputation as an emerging regional centre for international hockey.
