New Indian digital eOCI card launch offers easier travel for expats in Oman

Muscat: The Government of India has introduced the Electronic Overseas Citizen of India card, with the new digital system taking effect from 30 June 2026. The electronic upgrade is available immediately for both new applicants and existing cardholders. The newly designed card incorporates a range of enhanced security features, enabling individuals to travel and access various essential services smoothly without the absolute necessity of carrying a physical booklet.

Eligible individuals can now easily download their digital card by logging directly into the official portal or by utilising the mobile application.

For the convenience of current travellers, the Indian authorities have confirmed that existing physical booklets will remain completely valid for immigration purposes and all other associated public services, meaning there is no immediate requirement to phase them out.

Indian Embassy in Oman said in a post on X: "The Government of India has introduced Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) Card with effect from 30 June 2026 for both new applicants and existing OCI Card holders.

The e-OCI card can be downloaded by login into OCI portal (https://ociservices.gov.in) and through the official ‘Indian Visa Su-Swagatam' mobile app."
