COLOMBO: India has provided more than US$7.5 billion in relief and development assistance to Sri Lanka, including over US$850 million in outright grants, according to the Indian High Commission in Colombo.
Speaking at a seminar on the study of the Pali language in Colombo, Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha said the assistance has funded projects across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, covering sectors such as housing, healthcare, education, land and railway transport, renewable energy, and port and industrial development.
India played a key role during Sri Lanka's unprecedented economic crisis in 2022, supplying fuel, medicines and essential food items before the International Monetary Fund's bailout programme was finalised. The support helped sustain the country's critical imports and laid the groundwork for increased Indian investment in energy, infrastructure and digitalisation projects in areas including Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee, and the Northern and Eastern provinces.
New Delhi says the assistance aligns with its "Neighbourhood First" policy and "MAHASAGAR" vision for regional security and economic cooperation.
Regional analysts note that India's economic and political influence in Sri Lanka has grown significantly amid strategic competition in the Indian Ocean. While the investments have generated employment opportunities and supported infrastructure development, some political and economic observers have cautioned that excessive dependence on a single partner could affect Sri Lanka's foreign policy autonomy.
As India becomes an increasingly important partner in Sri Lanka's development agenda, analysts say Colombo faces the challenge of balancing close bilateral cooperation with maintaining national legal standards, tax transparency and sovereignty.
The two countries have also expanded cooperation beyond infrastructure into cultural and religious ties. Following India's decision in October 2024 to grant Classical Language status to Pali, both nations have stepped up efforts to strengthen Buddhist cultural and academic collaboration.
India also extended immediate humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka through Operation Sagar Bandhu following the recent Ditwah cyclone.
