Muscat: The cochlear implant team at Al Nahda Hospital has performed over 835 cochlear implant surgeries, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance its specialised services as the leading centre for this type of surgery in the Sultanate of Oman.
Al Nahda Hospital, part of the Khoula General Hospital Directorate, provides comprehensive cochlear implant services, including diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, in accordance with the latest medical practices in this field. The hospital continues to develop surgical techniques, performing a number of cochlear implant surgeries using local anaesthesia, based on the patient's health assessment and the decision of the specialised medical team.
A cochlear implant is an electronic device surgically implanted in the inner ear to help people with severe to profound hearing loss who do not benefit sufficiently from hearing aids. It works by stimulating the auditory nerve and helping the brain receive sound signals.
This type of intervention contributes to improving hearing and speech comprehension, enhancing communication and social interaction skills, and supporting language and speech development in children, in addition to improving their quality of life.
The cochlear implant team continues to conduct regular visits to various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman to perform surgeries and facilitate access to specialised care for beneficiaries, thus promoting the principle of equitable access to specialised healthcare services.
