ROP warns public against electronic blackmail, urges victims to report incidents

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has warned the public against electronic blackmail, urging victims not to respond to perpetrators and to report incidents promptly to the specialised authorities. Electronic blackmail involves using technology and social media to threaten or intimidate individuals by obtaining private information, photographs or videos and threatening to publish or misuse them.

According to an awareness message issued by the ROP, perpetrators may use fake accounts, hacked accounts or leaked old data to obtain personal information and exploit victims.

The demands made by perpetrators may include money, additional photographs or videos, carrying out unlawful acts, or gaining control over and exploiting victims. The ROP highlighted several warning signs that may indicate a person is being subjected to electronic blackmail. These include noticeable changes in behaviour, unusual financial problems and psychological distress.

The authority advised the public not to respond to or negotiate with blackmailers, as responding may encourage further demands.

Victims are also advised to preserve all evidence, including messages, photographs, account details and other relevant information, and to avoid deleting conversations or other digital records that could assist investigations. The ROP urged anyone facing electronic blackmail to contact the specialised authorities through the designated reporting channels.
