Oman showcases integrated national green hydrogen system to international partners

Seoul: Oman Hydrogen Company (Hydrom) concluded its promotional tour in the Republic of Korea as part of the Sultanate's efforts to enhance international cooperation in the field of clean energy and promote the third round of public bidding for green hydrogen project land.

The roadshow aimed to showcase the Sultanate of Oman's integrated national green hydrogen system to international partners and highlight its investment readiness, based on land allocation, joint infrastructure development, and supportive legislative and regulatory frameworks.

The tour coincided with the financial incentive package announced by Hydrom to enhance the economic viability of projects and increase the attractiveness of the Sultanate of Oman as a reliable investment destination.

The Sultanate of Oman's delegation was headed by Mohsin Hamad Al Hadrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, who emphasised that the Sultanate of Oman is moving towards consolidating its position as a global centre for the production, transportation, and export of green hydrogen, strengthening its position on the clean energy map.

He explained that the Sultanate of Oman's vision is based on diversifying energy sources through renewable energy and green hydrogen, as part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing energy security and stability, supporting the national economy, and achieving sustainable added value.

These efforts complement the Sultanate of Oman's goals of achieving net zero carbon by 2050.

He pointed out that the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Korea in August 2023 constitutes an important framework for enhancing cooperation in the green transformation process, through the exchange of expertise in policies and technologies for the production, storage, and distribution of clean energy, in addition to the fields of research, development, and capacity building.

He emphasised that this memorandum represents an extension of the historical relations between the two countries in the oil and gas sector, and an advanced step towards expanding the partnership to include the green hydrogen sector through joint investments, localising innovation-based industries, and developing supply chains, thus consolidating the two countries’ positions as major partners in the energy sector and achieving their shared aspirations.

For his part, Sheikh Zakaria Hamad Al Saadi,, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Republic of Korea, explained that holding the Omani-Korean Green Hydrogen Forum in Seoul represents an important step towards strengthening the economic partnership between the two countries and opening new horizons for cooperation in the renewable energy and green hydrogen sectors, supporting the global transition to clean energy and a low-carbon economy.

The Ambassador explained that the Omani Embassy in Seoul places great importance on promoting the investment opportunities offered by the Sultanate of Oman in the energy sector, and seeks to strengthen communication channels between government institutions and investment companies in both countries.

He emphasised that this forum reflects the strong relations based on mutual trust and constructive partnership, and paves the way for the launch of strategic projects that contribute to serving the interests of both countries and strengthening Oman's position as a global center for green hydrogen.

The promotional tour included bilateral meetings with several Korean energy institutions, as well as the Oman-Korea Green Hydrogen Investment Forum in Seoul.

The forum served as a platform to discuss cooperation opportunities between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Korea, combining Oman's renewable resources and regulatory capabilities with Korea's advanced industrial technologies.

The tour also included a field visit to Doosan's facilities in Changwon, allowing the delegation to learn about the latest technologies supporting the hydrogen economy.

For his part, Eng. Abdulaziz Al Shidhani, Managing Director of Hydrom, emphasised that the Oman-Korea Green Hydrogen Forum, hosted by Seoul, represents an important milestone for introducing investment opportunities in the green hydrogen sector and promoting the third round of bidding projects.

He stated that the Sultanate of Oman has allocated more than 50,000 square kilometres for hydrogen production projects, and has so far awarded nine projects through two bidding rounds with investments exceeding $50 billion. The Sultanate aims to produce 1.5 million tonnes annually by 2030, placing it among the top 10 green hydrogen exporters globally, according to estimates by the International Energy Agency.

He added that the third round, which launched in April 2025, builds on the momentum of the previous two rounds by extending the nine-month period for preparing bids and forming alliances, in addition to providing flexibility in selecting development sites within areas of up to 300 square kilometres, along with a new incentive package.

He pointed out that the Sultanate of Oman possesses competitive advantages that make it an attractive destination for global capital in the hydrogen sector.

These include its strategic geographic location between European and Asian markets, with more than 10 percent of global trade passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. Oman also boasts abundant natural resources, including high solar radiation and strong wind speeds, a stable economic environment, and a transparent and clear regulatory framework.

He added that the partnership with the Republic of Korea represents a fundamental economic pillar for linking the Sultanate of Oman's resources and capabilities with Korean technical expertise and markets, paving the way for the establishment of a green hydrogen trade corridor that will add value to both countries and support global efforts to transition to clean energy.

He explained that the third round demonstrated that the partnership between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of South Korea is capable of moving from dialogue to implementation, and from talking about opportunities to launching actual projects that enhance energy security and support global transformation.

He explained that what distinguished the forum was the clarity of areas that can be worked on, from linking supply to demand, to developing infrastructure, and establishing sustainable investment models. He pointed out that the role of Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) through these rounds is not limited to attracting new investments, but rather establishing an integrated market for green hydrogen, which opens up broad economic and industrial opportunities for the Sultanate of Oman and its partners, and lays the foundations for reliable trade corridors for decades to come.

It's worth noting that the promotional tour in South Korea reflected growing international interest in the Omani approach, marking a new step forward for Hydrom towards building future energy corridors that will connect the Sultanate of Oman to global demand centers, supporting the national goals of transitioning to a clean energy-based economy and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
