Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has welcomed the adoption of a series of resolutions by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress, held on Monday in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
These resolutions reinforce the rights of the Palestinian people to postal services. Oman emphasised that this step embodies the spirit of justice and fairness and reflects international solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The conference approved three main pillars, which were supported by Oman and a number of other member states. These included: Upgrading the membership of the State of Palestine in the Union, ensuring it has equal rights and obligations as other member states; Full implementation of previous UPU agreements and resolutions regarding Palestine's right to postal exchange via the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; and providing technical and financial support to rebuild postal infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.
In Oman's address to the conference, Nasr Badr Al Busaidi, Chairman of Oman Post, affirmed that the UPU was founded on the principle of delivering mail to every person without discrimination or exclusion. He pointed out that the Palestinian people are still deprived of this fundamental human right.
He stated, "The Palestinian postal service, which is supposed to be a bridge for communication, has become a scene of suffering: offices are demolished, workers are targeted, letters do not arrive, and families wait for news and medicine. Depriving Palestinians of their mail is depriving them of the simplest meanings of life and dignity."
He clarified that the strength of the Union lies in its justice and equality for all peoples, and he called on the international community and conference members to take a clear stance that restores the Palestinian postal service's role as a bridge for communication and hope.
Oman commended the supportive positions shown by the participants, affirming that these historic resolutions not only secure the rights of the Palestinian postal service but also strengthen the role of the UPU as a UN organisation that guarantees comprehensive postal services and humanitarian access.
