5.7 magnitude earthquake near Dhaka triggers tremors in Kolkata

A moderate 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Friday morning at 10:08 am (IST), sending noticeable tremors across Eastern India, including Kolkata.

Recorded by agencies like NCS, USGS, and GFZ, the quake's epicentre was situated approximately 10 to 14 kilometres east-southeast of Dhaka, near Narsingdi.

Due to its very shallow depth of only about 10 kilometres, the shaking was strong enough to be felt across a wide region. In Kolkata, residents reported feeling mild tremors that caused fans and wall hangings to sway slightly, prompting many people to rush out of their homes and offices as a precaution, with visuals of the evacuation quickly spreading on social media.
