Al Hamra: Jebel Shams, the highest mountain peak in the Sultanate of Oman, continues to strengthen its position as a leading destination for nature and adventure tourism, thanks to its unique geographical features, dramatic rock formations, and panoramic views overlooking Wadi Nakhr.

As one of the country’s most prominent natural landmarks, Jebel Shams attracts visitors from inside and outside the Sultanate, particularly enthusiasts of mountain climbing and hiking trails.

Under the supervision of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, maintenance and rehabilitation works were recently completed on the Via Ferrata (W6) route at Jebel Shams—one of the most internationally recognised and fully equipped climbing routes in Oman.

The project was implemented through community volunteer efforts and aimed at enhancing route efficiency and ensuring user safety in line with international best practices for adventure tourism.

The maintenance works included replacing old anchor points with stronger, weather-resistant iron supports.

A total of 48 rust-resistant supports were installed along the suspended metal cable, which extends approximately 120 metres from the top of the trail to the lower section near the suspended pool in Sab Bani Khamis.

The cable plays a vital role in stabilising climbers and ensuring balance during ascent and descent.

Mahmoud bin Nasser Al-Fahdi, an Adventure Technician, said the initiative relied on specialised equipment and high-quality materials, including 316 stainless steel, known for its durability and resistance to corrosion in harsh mountainous environments.

He added that the project significantly enhances safety standards and improves the overall efficiency of the route’s anchoring system.

Al-Fahdi noted that the Jebel Shams Via Ferrata is among the longest and most prominent metal climbing routes in the Sultanate and passes through one of the world’s deepest rock fissures, giving it exceptional tourism value.

He highlighted the area’s natural beauty, environmental diversity, and the presence of wild trees surrounding the trail, making it a key attraction for adventure tourism in Oman.
