Al Suwaiq Hospital performs its first laparoscopic colon resection

Al Suwaiq; Al Suwaiq Hospital recently succeeded in conducting the first laparoscopic colon resection in its history. The surgery set a milestone in the hospital’s medical achievements. It was the outcome of rapid development in the hospital’s facilities, helping it keep pace with updates in surgical specializations.

Dr. Hatim Dhiab Al Saadi, Director of Al Suwaiq Hospital, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the surgery lasted three hours and was conducted in accordance with approved medical standards. He added that the patient's condition was clinically stable and was discharged from the hospital on the fourth day after the surgery.

Dr. Hatim added that the surgery gains significance as a new accomplishment in providing specialized surgical care within North Al Batinah Governorate.

He pointed out that the hospital brought this type of specialized surgery close to the local community, noting that, earlier, patients from North Al Batinah and South Al Batinah governorates could only access this service in Muscat.

The success of the laparoscopic colon resection at Al Suwaiq Hospital also reflects the high level of integration and institutional cooperation with the specialized team of the Royal Hospital, said Dr. Hatim, noting that this step contributes to the principle of decentralization in health services.

Dr. Hatim explained that the operation was performed by qualified national staff from Al Suwaiq Hospital, assisted by a specialized surgical team from the Royal Hospital. This type of cooperation stems from a vision to transfer expertise from larger health institutions and to enhance the sustainability of such advanced surgeries with each health establishment, he added.

Speaking about future plans of Al Suwaiq Hospital, Dr. Hatim said that the hospital seeks to expand its advanced endoscopic surgeries to include upper and lower gastrointestinal surgeries, liver and pancreas surgeries, as well as orthopaedic and paediatric surgeries.

He added that the hospital’s plans fit within a clear strategic vision aimed at developing specialized services, raising the efficiency of national cadres and enhancing the quality of healthcare provided to the local community.
