Razat Farm successfully produces local pineapples after fifteen year research journey

Muscat : The Sultaniyah Razat Farm, under the auspices of the Royal Court Affairs, has successfully produced local pineapples after a fifteen-year research and agricultural journey. This achievement stems from testing the local environment's capacity to support this economically and nutritionally valuable crop.

Pineapple cultivation at the Sultaniyah Razat Farm in the Dhofar Governorate has evolved from limited potting to extensive cultivation in the ground under the shade of trees and in greenhouses. The farm has adapted well to Dhofar's climate, where the growing season extends from July to December. This period is characterised by the mild weather and high humidity associated with the autumn season in Dhofar.

After approximately six months, the vegetative growth reaches its peak, and the fruit is ready for harvest after about twelve months, when the lower part begins to turn golden yellow.

Engineer Suhail bin Saeed Al-Mashani, Senior Agricultural Engineer at Razat Al-Sultaniyah Farm, stated: “The pineapple cultivation experiment at Razat Al-Sultaniyah Farm is a successful and pioneering experience in the agricultural field. Several pineapple varieties were cultivated, including Queen, Mauritius, and MD-2. The current MD-2 variety is one of the most widespread varieties globally, distinguished by its large fruit size, ranging from 2 to over 4 kilograms, in addition to its sweet taste and high market value.”

He added: “The pineapple crop is characterized by its low water requirements compared to other tropical crops. Tissue culture technology has contributed to the success of this project by providing a large number of uniform, disease-free seedlings. This technology will also contribute to the future expansion of cultivated areas.”

It is worth noting that the successful production of pineapple at the Sultaniyah Razat Farm is a project that promotes diversity in the agricultural field, emphasizes the importance of understanding climate and soil and accurate scientific observation, and opens up broader horizons for non-traditional crops in the Sultanate of Oman.
