Environment Authority releases 60 reem gazelles in Wadi Mareer valley

Al Mudhaibi: As part of an initiative marking the start of the second phase of a project to reintroduce gazelles to their natural habitats, the Environment Authority recently released 60 reem gazelles in Wadi Mareer valley of Rimal Al Sharqiyah wildlife area.

The initiative is undertaken in cooperation with the Directorate General of Nature Conservation and the Environment Department in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

A ceremony to this effect was held in the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi under the auspices of Mahmoud bin Yahya Al Dhuhli, Governor of North Al Sharqiyah, in the presence of Dr Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.

Wadi Mareer extends between the governorates of North Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta. It was selected for the gazelle release project due to its open desert expanses and vegetation cover that includes Al Ghaf trees, which provide essential habitats and natural resources for a variety of wildlife species.

Assisted by the local communities, the authorities concerned maintain constant monitoring of the site to ensure the protection of the gazelles as they live in their natural environment.

Al Reem-2 project constitutes a significant step forward in the Sultanate of Oman’s efforts to conserve biodiversity and restore wildlife species to their natural habitats.
