Oman participates in meeting on Paris Climate Agreement

New York:The Sultanate of Oman today took part in a high-level meeting marking the 10th anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement. The meeting was held in conjunction with the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Oman's delegation was led by Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi.

Sayyid Badr said in a speech that the Sultanate of Oman, under the Royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, continues to assume its role as an active partner in initiatives aimed at protecting the environment and combating climate change.

He pointed out that, in a bid to meet the carbon neutrality targets by 2050, Oman Vision 2040 made environmental sustainability a fundamental pillar of national development. He added that Oman strives to realize this objective by promoting green investments, renewable energy and green hydrogen.

Sayyid Badr explained that the Sultanate of Oman seeks to generate more than 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, in addition to producing one million tons of green hydrogen annually—eventually raising the overall volume to 8 million tons by 2050.

The minister outlined the Sultanate of Oman's initiatives to develop sustainable cities and integrate climate norms into all sectors—from agriculture to health and tourism, besides developing an early warning system for cyclones, floods and heat waves. This proactive action contributed to raising the levels of readiness and life-saving protocols, he noted.

Sayyid Badr stressed that addressing global climate challenges requires dedicated international cooperation and necessitates the exchange of technology and expertise. In this context, he called upon decision-makers—notably leaders of major economies—to encourage low-carbon industries, accelerate the development of green infrastructure and support social segments and neighbourhoods that are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

At the conclusion of his speech, Sayyid Badr underlined the outcomes of the Paris Agreement. He stressed that the success of the international community in this mission requires the acceleration of joint action and the consolidation of mutual trust—to ensure a sustainable future for future generations.
