Oman prioritises safer power networks in flood-prone valleys

Muscat: Addressing electrical networks located in valley pathways has become a top priority in the Sultanate of Oman, following clear directives issued by the Public Services Regulatory Authority to study affected infrastructure and implement high-quality projects aimed at improving safety and long-term reliability.

According to Nama Electricity Distribution Company, comprehensive assessments have already been carried out on all electrical lines situated within valley routes.

These networks are currently in the design phase, with plans to reconstruct them to enhanced technical standards. The initiative is expected to significantly boost network efficiency and strengthen resilience against harsh weather conditions, particularly flash floods.

Chief Executive Officer Alaa Hassan Moussa explained that several major projects are already underway. One of the most notable is the development of the electrical network in Wadi Fida, a project designed to tackle longstanding challenges caused by infrastructure being located directly in flood-prone areas.

He noted that while existing concrete poles are structurally strong, their placement within valley paths exposes them to significant danger during heavy rains and flash floods. To address this, the project involves replacing these concrete poles with iron ones, strategically positioned along safer routes adjacent to the valley. This redesign is expected to minimize flood-related damage, improve network stability, and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to nearby communities.

The CEO confirmed that more than RO 30 million has been allocated to these efforts. The funding will support the relocation of affected infrastructure, reinforcement of the electrical system, and implementation of complementary projects, including the construction of new substations and broader network upgrades.

Beyond immediate infrastructure improvements, Oman is also advancing its long-term energy strategy with a strong focus on renewable sources. Special emphasis is being placed on wind energy projects, which are considered among the most promising in the region. These projects are expected to generate between 5,500 and 6,500 megawatts—equivalent to more than 50 percent of the Sultanate’s current electricity production capacity.

These developments are aligned with the national objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040, which aims to increase the contribution of renewable energy to approximately 30 percent of the energy mix by 2030.

Engineer Alaa further revealed that the overall portfolio of upcoming projects across electricity, gas transmission, water, and sanitation sectors is projected to exceed RO 8 billion, underscoring the Sultanate’s commitment to building a more resilient, sustainable, and future-ready infrastructure system.
